VB Steel operates from Pioneer Road in Chisholm, Ontario, roughly 20 minutes south of North Bay. Ian and Lisa Van Blyderveen own the business, and Ian has spent 26 years working metal. The same equipment that produces load-carrying components also produces the steel signs the shop sells online, which is unusual for a fabricator of this size and suggests how the work is set up.Gates and fence lines take up a steady share of the schedule. Ontario-made steel fencing is measured to the actual opening rather than trimmed from a stock panel, which matters on rural lots where laneways slope and nothing sits square. The shop produces swing gates, fence panels, railings, and privacy screens, cuts the parts on a CNC plasma table measuring 5 feet by 10 feet, and powder coats most finished work before it leaves. Steel stock is also carried on site in square tubing, angles, flat bar, and plate.
"A gate that still swings true after ten winters comes down to what happens before anyone welds anything," a company spokesperson said. "We want to know where the frost line sits, how wide the opening really is, and what the ground does across it. Get that settled early and the customer stops thinking about the gate, which is the whole point of the thing."
The company holds CWB Division 2 certification. Ian carries a Red Seal as a Structural Plate Fitter and Welder along with a CWB Certified Welding Supervisor designation. More than 30,000 projects and parts have gone out of the shop to date. Powder coating is sprayed electrostatically and cured in an oven at roughly 350 to 420 degrees, producing a finish that stands up to road salt and repeated freeze-and-thaw cycles far better than paint on bare steel. Nothing is imported and resold.
