April 25, 2016 | Mumbai: In a rare example of a facial plastic surgery miracle, a patient with 30 facial bone fractures was successfully treated by Dr. Debraj Shome. He is an internationally celebrated facial plastic surgeon & oculoplastic surgeon, in Mumbai, India.
The patient from Ranchi, Jharkhand came to Mumbai for treatment after a road accident, due to which he suffered from 30 bone fractures on his face and had to be hospitalised. The treatment involved treating all the pan-facial fractures, using the trans-coronal flap approach. The highly specialised facial plastic surgery involves exposing the anterior cranial vault along with other parts of the facial bone structure such as the forehead, condyle and subcondylar regions, frontal sinus area, the Zygoma and Zygomatic arch, and orbit of the eye.
Dr. Debraj Shome took away the outer skin layer and inner musculature to expose the skeletal system and treated all fractures in a surgery, which lasted quite a few hours. Trans-coronal flap surgeries are some of the most complex facial plastic surgeries, as they involve treating the bone after taking away the outer skin layer and inner musculature. The entire facial skin and musculature flap can be taken down, by this technique, so that the doctors can work on underlying bones and treat the fractures of the face. Dr. Shome was instrumental in treating this patient and getting him back on his feet, after expertly treating all fractures on his face.
Dr. Shome was not surprised at the high number of fractures in this case. He has seen and treated various road accident victims over the years, and has tirelessly campaigned for road safety and traffic rules awareness. However, he believes that it has to be a comprehensive effort from everyone including the government, central and state healthcare systems, road construction industry, police, and people.
“Wearing seat belts and following traffic rules can be a start”, he says. Dr. Shome mentioned that Indian road conditions are not keeping pace with the country’s development. It is a sad fact that India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. States like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh lead the rest in this shameful statistic. Dr. Shome added that people have to start following traffic rules, wear seat belts and helmets and certainly not over speed.
Dr. Shome is a celebrated oculoplastic and plastic surgeon and has received numerous accolades for his work over the years. He has published over 45 research papers in the top most facial plastic surgery journals of the world and has presented at numerous seminars and conferences around the world. He has founded The Esthetic Clinics in Mumbai, a chain of plastic and cosmetic surgery clinics in association with celebrated dermatologist, Dr. Rinky Kapoor.
