The renowned doctor highlighted that congenital blepharoptosis, a form of ptosis that is present right from birth, can be better treated by extirpation of the levator muscle and by connecting the forehead muscles to the eyelid muscles through artificial silicone rod materials. This problem occurs when patients are not able to move their eyelashes upwards due to a developmental disorder in the levator muscles. The natural reflexive action of the eyelashes is hampered, and this prevents the patient from seeing clearly.

In this new treatment, Dr. Shome at first removes the preaponeurotic fat by using a thermal cautery. The levator muscle is then pulled down to prevent it from affecting the upper eyelid. Thereafter, the doctor ties a silicon ring to the tarsus and passes it retroseptally through median incisions. He completes the procedure by contouring the eyelid and using sutures to form the lid crease.

Dr. Shome highlighted that not many people are aware that ptosis surgery is actually a specialized field that requires an oculoplasty surgeon to treat the problem. Oculoplasty requires dual expertise – first in ophthalmology so that the doctor knows the intricacies of the eye and second in plastic surgery so that the surgeon can treat the different muscles that cause the problem.
