"These three songs have a common theme of forgiving ourselves and others, struggling with decision, growth and moving forward." Bryn Ryan-Van-Dyke
Temporary Man: Temporary Man was most definitely written about a specific "Temporary Man". Truthfully, I had so much material, pages and pages, it was difficult to condense down to 3.25 minutes. Temporary Man had the longest writing process of any of my songs to date. Even though the original energy was directed at a specific person, it really focused on what I call the "too much candy in the candy store" mentality of a lot of the men my friends and I ran across during that time period. Even though the song was born out of pain and situational frustration, it is really about being true to yourself and not wasting your time on someone that doesn't appreciate your special unique qualities. They don't deserve your attention. Brush yourself off, learn from your experience, and move on. You really won't find what's right for you if you don't let go of what's wrong.
Fast Train: Most of my songs have a story, or involve a situation that tugs on my emotion or imagination. Admittedly, Fast Train wasn't one of those. The motivation for writing Fast Train, was based on what I call the "Princess in the Pea" syndrome. The fairy tale where a pea is placed under a girl's mattress without her knowledge to test her sensitivity as to whether or not she's a princess. I'm no princess...but I do get urges to write that start as a little tickle or nudge in the pit of my stomach that grows until it can no longer be ignored. I was in that state with my eyes closed trying to envision what to write about when I opened my eyes and saw a girl on TV chasing after a train. So, I made up a scenario. In my imagination, the character is a little lovably kooky and gets an impulse to chase after someone that captures her heart when not searching it out. I tried to illustrate this spontaneous "love" happening while self realization and growth makes it possible to be open. It's not really about the person being chased, it's more about being able to love yourself and move forward in life being open to what is possible.
Never Again: Never Again was written right after the breakup of a long term relationship. Even though we were no longer a couple, we still worked together musically. We knew the hardest thing was keeping a band together and were determined to persevere. It was a challenging time for both of us to deal with regret and conquer jealousy for the sake of making music and friendship. Never Again explores the struggle of loss and dealing with the doubts and indecision. Can the differences be overcome? Is there hope? We collided in what we needed as a couple, but had respect and generally liked each other. It was a challenging time. But, in the end, we endured and still have a friendship today.
