The Storm Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals impacted by the criminal justice system, is taking a significant step forward by launching businesses designed to provide sustainable employment for those reentering society after incarceration.Founded by Rev. Nic Patterson, The Storm Foundation is named in honor of James “Storm” Summers, whose vision continues to inspire the mission. Patterson and Summers shared a deep commitment to supporting individuals in reintegrating into society after incarceration, and today the foundation offers resources to over 1.9 million incarcerated individuals across the U.S. The foundation provides free digital resources by shifting mindsets and preparing people for successful reentry.
Rev. Patterson’s own story of resilience and redemption—having overcome incarceration to become a classically trained pianist, best-selling author, TED coach, and international speaker—guides the foundation’s mission. Patterson’s journey, marked by music and faith, led him to establish The Storm Foundation to combat the systemic barriers facing formerly incarcerated individuals. His upcoming book, Deeply Planted, and the Broadway musical Darkest Night, based on his life, will further amplify his message of hope and inspire millions of people nationwide.
The Storm Foundation addresses the immediate and critical needs of those released from incarceration, including employment, housing, and essential reentry support. Many individuals face overwhelming challenges, such as inadequate financial support upon release, often leading to despair and relapse. Through initiatives that provide employment opportunities, restorative housing, and essential services, The Storm Foundation works to break the cycle of recidivism.
“Success doesn’t happen by chance; it happens when opportunity meets intentional choices,” said Rev. Patterson. “We must create real opportunities for people to thrive, not just give them a second chance.”
The foundation’s efforts have already had a profound impact, helping individuals like Marcus, who after 15 years in prison, now works as a skilled carpenter and has been reunited with his family. The foundation also supports the Rodriguez family, whose son, David, now manages a community garden project after his release. Additionally, the foundation continues to expand its reach, collaborating with local and national organizations to enhance its services and grow its network of support. The Storm Foundation aims to create a nationwide impact, offering life-changing resources that inspire hope and empowerment for those who have paid their debt to society.
The Storm Foundation is calling on businesses, organizations, and individuals to contribute to these efforts through donations of equipment, transportation, advertising support, and awareness.
