Tender Heart Learning Center - Top Rated Holiday Children Books

BriefingWire.com, 11/18/2015 - These old and new tales will get everybody into the holiday spirit! There's a book on the list for children (and children-at-heart) of any age.

1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The Grinch is probably the most popular of all holiday villains. In Dr. Seuss' modern classic, the Grinch plots to steal Christmas from the happy Whos of Whoville. However, he's in for an unexpected change of heart as he comes to understand the true meaning of the holiday.

2. Letters from Father Christmas

A captivating read by J.R.R. Tolkien. The book is made up of letters from Father Christmas, describing the activities at the North Pole and the lives of all who dwell there.

3. A Christmas Carol

In this story, grumpy old Scrooge is a miserable man who cares nothing about people, but just about his business' bottom line. On Christmas Eve he is visited by some very persuasive ghosts who make him take stock of his life. He doesn't like what he sees and the next day he is a changed man.

4. My Father's Angels

A child looks up to heaven and says of angels, "They're all above me." Children are drawn to the idea of guardians watching over all they do, and this book has sweet and thoughtful illustrations of angels standing ready in various situations. The text is gentle and rhythmic and the book comes with a read-along CD narrated by Gloria Gaither, a well-known Christian singer and author.

5. Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree

Mr. Willowby's tree is too large -- even for his mansion -- so the butler cuts off the top and tosses it out. It doesn't end up in the trash -- read the book to find out what happens next.

6. The Polar Express

The Polar Express won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for best illustrations. It is the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve who gets to take a trip to the North Pole with Santa Claus and some other lucky children. There is a special surprise for him when he gets to the North Pole.

7. The Nutcracker

This is E.T.A. Hoffmann's original story turned into a little cardboard theater. A nutcracker comes to life, battles with the evil mouse king, then takes Marie, the girl who tended to his wounds, on a tour of Christmas Wood and Candytown. Her love breaks the spell over him, which leads to the happily ever after.
